Those recommendations serve different jobs. A paint and body editor helps you create a look; a tuning menu lets you adjust a car’s behavior; a mechanic game puts the work on the garage floor. The best choice depends on which part you want to spend time doing.
Compare the games
We reviewed official game and platform information on October 27, 2026. These picks are editorial judgments based on documented features and availability, not hands-on test results or performance benchmarks. Customization options can vary by vehicle. The hero image is a general workshop illustration, not a screenshot from a particular game.

Best all-around garage: Forza Horizon 6
Forza Horizon 6 combines a large car collection with quick access to visual changes and driving events. Playground Games describes additional body kits, window liveries, new rims, and separate front and rear wheel choices. The available parts differ between cars, so check the model you care about before assuming it can wear a particular kit.
It is a useful fit if you want to build a car, drive it, then return to the garage with another idea. Its arcade-leaning approach also makes it easier to get started than a setup-focused simulator. Treat a tune as a game setup, though: the same numbers are not instructions for adjusting a real car.
The game is available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its PS5 release is scheduled for January 26, 2027, with Premium Edition early access scheduled for January 21. Until then, PlayStation players looking for a garage today have other options below.
Best for PlayStation liveries: Gran Turismo 7
Gran Turismo 7 suits players who want to make a car look right and then take it onto a circuit. Its official product page describes paint and body customization, tuning parts, more than 130 wheel designs, and 650 aero parts. Widebody conversions and other changes are available on supported cars. Scapes and race photography give you places to frame the finished build.
The attraction is the combination: make a livery, choose parts, adjust the setup, and enter a race with the same car. It is available on PS4 and PS5, while BeamNG’s console release is on PS5.
If you are exploring a design for a real vehicle, game editors work within their available cars and parts. An AI car customization mockup can suggest a different concept, but generated images may invent parts or overlook fitment. Neither replaces checking actual parts for the car you own.
Best for parts and tuning: BeamNG.drive
BeamNG.drive is the choice for players who enjoy the mechanics of a build. Its vehicle configuration system uses a parts tree, and adjustable components can expose further tuning options. That makes it useful for comparing configurations and considering how changes affect the way a car behaves. Start with our BeamNG car customization guide if you want a walkthrough of the garage.
BeamNG is now available on PC and PS5. The PS5 version does not include the PC mod repository, World Editor, or VR, and PC saved vehicles cannot be transferred to it. Keep those differences in mind if community content is part of your reason for buying.
The October 2026 update also added native local split-screen. Our BeamNG split-screen guide covers how local play works and the differences between platforms.
Best for circuit-focused setup: Assetto Corsa EVO
Assetto Corsa EVO is a PC option for drivers who want to spend their time on circuit driving and setup. It remains in Early Access, so its features and content are still developing. That is an important buying condition: choose it because the current game interests you, with an understanding that it is a work in progress.
Forza Motorsport is another circuit option on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its car progression update made performance parts available from Car Level 1. The team has since said it will keep servers and events running, but will not add new cars, tracks, features, or regular bug fixes. See the Forza year-in-review announcement before buying it for future updates.
Best for street and drift builds
Need for Speed Unbound is a good fit when the appearance of a street build comes first. EA’s customization overview describes wraps, body kits, removable panels, and driving effects. It is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. EA ended live-service updates in 2025, so consider the game on the basis of what it already offers.
CarX Drift Racing Online is more focused: it pairs car tuning with drifting and online play. Pick it when that specific style of driving is the goal. The PC version also supports Steam Workshop maps; do not assume those are available on consoles.
The Crew Motorfest offers another route for players who want a wide mix of vehicles. You earn performance parts through events, while visual options vary by vehicle and manufacturer. It is worth considering if you want to move between different kinds of driving rather than concentrate on drifting alone.
Best for garage work: Car Mechanic Simulator 2021
Car Mechanic Simulator 2021 is a released single-player game about inspecting, taking apart, repairing, and rebuilding cars. Its appeal is the work at the bench and under the hood. Choose it for assembly and repair rather than a detailed comparison of lap times.
The next game has changed names since our earlier review. It is now Car Mechanic Simulator 2027, and the Steam listing plans the full release for the first quarter of 2027. A multiplayer demo is available; our Car Mechanic Simulator 2027 demo guide explains what to expect. A demo is a way to sample the upcoming game, not the full release.
Best mobile pick: CSR Racing 2
CSR Racing 2 is a free-to-download mobile drag racer for iOS and Android. Its developer describes paint, rims, wraps, and other visual changes alongside gear ratio, tire pressure, and nitrous tuning. Some color choices are limited by licensing.
It makes sense for short drag races and a portable garage. Its tuning is geared toward that format, so choose a circuit or parts-focused game if you want to explore a wider range of vehicle behavior. As with other free-to-play games, consider the in-app purchase model when deciding how you want to progress.
Make a useful comparison
In driving games that let you save setups, try changing one thing at a time. Save a baseline configuration, drive the same route under the same conditions, then adjust a part or setting and repeat the run. Note how the car feels as well as the time; one unusually fast lap does not establish a repeatable improvement.
The exercise can help you understand what a setting does within that game. Real cars add variables that a game cannot match exactly. If a virtual build inspires a real project, consider the car as a connected performance system and check how each proposed part works with the rest of the vehicle.
