35% window tint lets more visible light through than 20%, making it the more conservative starting point when visibility matters. A 20% option gives a darker appearance. Neither number tells you how much heat the film rejects, and neither is automatically legal on your vehicle’s front windows. Check the rules for each window before choosing a shade.
For a daily driver used after dark, start with the lightest legal film that meets your needs. Ask to see it installed on comparable glass, then compare heat performance and the written quote.
What 20% and 35% mean
Visible light transmission, or VLT, is the share of visible light that passes through a material. If the figures describe the same kind of measurement, 35% transmits 1.75 times as much light as 20%: 35 divided by 20. That is a light-transmission comparison, not a prediction of how much farther you can see at night.

Product names are not always exact measurements. LLumar’s March 2026 sheet, for example, lists IRX 35 at 39% VLT on its reference glass. Use the manufacturer’s performance sheet, rather than assuming the number in a film name is the finished window’s reading.
Factory glass changes the result
You are adding film to glass that already has its own light transmission. Ask the installer to measure the glass first and check the completed window with a meter afterward.
A useful illustration comes from 3M’s Ceramic IR technical sheet: Ceramic IR 35 is listed at 37% VLT on the sheet’s automotive reference glass and 45% on its clear reference glass. Those are different test assemblies using the same named film.
This is why choosing a “35” product is not enough to meet a rule requiring a particular minimum transmission. A rear window with factory privacy glass also needs its own assessment; copying the front-window film choice does not establish a matching result.
Which is better at night?
Between otherwise comparable 20% and 35% assemblies, 35% allows more light through. That is the reason to start there if your regular driving includes unlit roads, parking garages or reversing after dark. It is not a guarantee that 35% is suitable for your eyes, vehicle or local rules.
Photos are a poor buying test: camera exposure, outside light and the cabin interior can make the same tint look different. Ask the shop to show you a comparable installation from the driver’s seat. Consider the conditions you actually drive in, rather than judging only how the parked car looks from outside.

Does darker tint reject more heat?
Shade alone cannot answer that. Compare total solar energy rejection, or TSER, within a manufacturer’s data measured on the same glass. Keep infrared measurements separate: a narrow-band infrared rejection claim is not the same measurement as total solar energy rejection.
LLumar’s sheet lists ATC 20 dyed film at 25% VLT and 38% TSER, while IRX 35 ceramic film has 39% VLT and 54% TSER. For a hot-climate commuter, that makes a lighter heat-rejecting film worth asking about. Set your visibility and legal requirements first, then compare products that meet them.
Is 20% tint cheaper than 35%?
There is no universal price difference that follows from VLT alone. Ask for two versions of the same job: same vehicle, windows, film family, removal work and warranty, with only the shade changed. If one quote uses dyed film and the other uses premium ceramic, you are comparing more than darkness.
Use this quote checklist:
- Exact manufacturer, product line and shade for each window.
- Measured existing glass and expected finished VLT.
- Removal and adhesive-cleanup charges, if needed.
- Which windows are included and which are excluded.
- Written warranty coverage and the total including applicable charges.

Check the law before booking
Do not assume either shade is permitted because a shop sells it. Rules can distinguish front side windows, rear side windows and windshields, as well as vehicle classes and exemptions.
For one concrete example, New York DMV says the windshield and front side windows must allow at least 70% of light through. A finished 20% or 35% front-side-window assembly would not meet that ordinary requirement. Check the current DMV or equivalent authority for your jurisdiction and exact vehicle; this example is not a nationwide rule.
Before you choose
Write down the three things the installer needs to solve: the applicable legal limit, how you use the car after dark, and whether your main aim is appearance or heat rejection. Request a film recommendation and an installed quote against those requirements. You may find that a lighter option serves the car better than either shade you originally had in mind.
