For the 1989 International Motor Sports Association’s (IMSA) GTU season, Mazda decided to concentrate its factory efforts on the then-new MX-6 rather than the venerable RX-7x that filled the class. IMSA rules at the time allowed manufacturers to convert front-wheel-drive cars to rear-wheel drive, and substitute engines and transmissions, so the MX-6s featured two-rotor rotary engines and Hewland transaxles. Because of its location in the stock MX-6, the fuel cell’s placement ahead of the rear axle also provided great weight distribution, which led to the cars being particularly well balanced. In the 1989 season, Mazda MX-6s won three races and captured the Manufacturer’s Championship. The following year, the MX-6 won five races, the Driver’s Championship for Lance Stewart and, once again, the Manufacturer’s Championship. This particular car was driven to victory in Long Beach, California, and Watkins Glen International by John Finger, and helped Finger win the 1990 GTO/GTU series Most Improved Driver award.
